My daughter loves her baby snacks, we take them on every outing. But seeing how much we were spending on all her little puffs, crackers, and cookies, I was a little shocked.
Over $4 for a little container of puffs, that lasts a few days at most? No thank you.
Plus, most of them have lots of added sugars, which I’m not necessarily a fan of.
But as a parent, you know that keeping your baby fed and happy while you’re out and about is essential.
Hence, I looked for alternatives that are just as satisfying to my little one but don’t break the bank.
Here are my top 10 healthy baby snacks for on-the-go:
1. Cheerios
These classic puffed oat cereal rings are easy to eat and can keep your baby occupied for a while. They make a great healthy baby snack, as they’re fortified with iron and other essential nutrients.
Plus, they are much cheaper compared to other crunchy baby snack puffs.
2. Cut-up fruit
Whether it’s sliced apples, berries, or banana chunks, fruit is a healthy and portable snack option that many babies love.
If you are worried about the fruit spoiling or becoming messy – try freeze-dried fruit!
Now, this is a little pricier than traditional fruit or other baby snacks, but is also a fun experience for your baby to snack on.
3. Rice cakes
Rice cakes are a great option when it comes to healthy and inexpensive baby snacks.
These low-sugar, crunchy snacks are easy for little hands to hold.
There are lots of options with minimal ingredients, such as these rice cakes* where the only ingredient is brown rice.
You can break the rice cakes into pieces and add them to your baby’s snack cup when you’re on the go.
Or, you can be top them with nut butter or mashed avocado for some extra nutrition.
4. Puffs
If your little one loves the crunch of a puffed baby snack, you don’t have to deprive him of one.
But I can’t justify spending a large amount of money on a small container of cheese puffs.
Hence, I looked for a regular version that has good organic ingredients and comes in a larger size.
These Hippeas* checked all the boxes, and trust me, you’ll want to dig in yourself!
5. Cheese
If cheese is not on your list of healthy affordable baby snacks yet, you might want to add it.
Cheese is a good source of protein and calcium, and is a healthy choice that pairs well with the other baby snacks such as fruit or crackers.
Now, if you’re out and about you can bring some string cheese. Just remember to tear off small stringy pieces for your little one and don’t serve him the full piece, as it is a choking hazard.
You can also take a slice of cheese, cut it into small pieces, and add it to a snack cup for easy snacking on the go.
6. Sweet potato bites
I don’t know about your baby, but my daughter loves sweet potato!
It is a great and healthy baby snack that is packed with nutrients and can be easily taken on the go.
Simply cut up some sweet potato into cubes, drizzle it with a little bit of olive oil and roast it in the oven.
The cooled down cubes can be easily added to your baby’s snack plate or make a healthy addition to a snack cup on the go.
7. Baby food pouches
While I don’t always like spending money on baby snacks at the store, I like making the exception for food pouches.
These convenient pouches come in a variety of flavors and can be a lifesaver when you’re on the go. Also, they are usually an affordable and healthy baby snack option.
Just make sure to look for ones made with whole, organic ingredients and without added sugar or preservatives.
8. Whole-grain crackers
Crackers are another favorite of ours.
Opt for ones that are made with whole grains, which can provide some fiber and other nutrients, making them a healthy baby snack option.
You can serve them plain to your baby or top the crackers with mashed avocado or hummus for some extra flavor.
9. Hard-boiled eggs
Besides serving eggs for breakfast, hard-boiled eggs make a great and healthy snack option for your baby.
Eggs are a good source of protein and our little one loves them.
Just cut the egg into small pieces and it makes an easy to grab snack for your baby.
You can even bring them with you when you’re out and about. Just be sure to keep them chilled in a cooler or insulated bag until you’re ready to serve them.
10. Veggie sticks
Roasted carrot, celery, and cucumber sticks are a great and healthy baby snack.
They are easy to pack and bring when you’re out and about and can provide some crunch and nutrition for your little one.
If you are feeling fancy, you can add a little bit of hummus, too. This adds some more flavor and nutrition for your little one.
Just make sure you are cooking and cutting up the vegetables properly depending on your baby’s age, to avoid choking.
When in doubt I always check on the website www.solidstarts.com what their recommended serving option is.
