How to Find Friends as a New Mom

February 8, 2023

Finding friends as an adult can be hard. But how do you find friends as a new mom, when most of your friends still enjoy their single life?

When I became a mom and I had 0 friends with children living close to me, I felt incredibly lonely. I had so many questions and reading up on the internet was fine, but I missed the exchange and getting real life advice from others who have been there.

Also, being at home all day with my little one was sometimes just incredibly boring. But walking around the park by myself with the stroller for hours didn’t do it after a while. So I set out on a journey to find the best places to make new mom friends and build myself the support system I needed.

1. Library

One of my favorite places to meet other moms is the local library. Libraries often offer programs and activities tailored to children of any age.

For example, one local library near me offers a toddler storytime as well as a family playtime. And the best part is that it is free to attend. This gives the children an opportunity to play and enjoy storytime, and moms can meet up and get to know each other.

If your local library does not offer this service, check out libraries in neighboring towns.

2. Parks and Playgrounds

Spending time at local parks can be a great way to meet other moms and families. Look for parks with playgrounds. Depending on your child’s age, they might enjoy exploring the playground and you might meet other moms with children of similar age.

3. Baby and Toddler Classes

If your child is old enough, you might wan to sign him or her up for classes such as music, art, or gym classes. These classes can be a great opportunity for you to meet other new moms with children who have similar interests and are similar in age.

4. Apps and Online Communities

We have all heard about dating apps where you can find a partner. But did you know there are lots of apps to connect moms as well?

Apps like Peanut, Bumble BFF, and MomLife provide new moms with the opportunity to find friends from home.

5. Neighborhood events

One great option to meet other families in your area are neighborhood events. Check with your community whether there are new neighborhood events coming up such as block parties or community festivals.

Bonus: Bring your partner (and your kid(s), of course) to these events and maybe you can meet other families that you all get along and want to hang out with.

6. Community Groups

Many communities have mom groups that meet regularly for playdates, coffee, or other social events. Try searching online or on Social Media for groups in your area or reach out to local parenting organizations.

7. Volunteer Opportunities

If there are volunteer opportunities near you, these might also be a great option to meet other moms. Volunteering at local schools, community centers, or non-profit organizations can help you connect with others who have similar values and interests.

Conclusion

Having a strong support system as a new mom is incredibly important to navigate the challenges of parenthood. Thankfully, there are lots of ways to connect with other moms going through the same as you.

And while it takes some effort and energy to get out of the house with a little one and meet up with other moms, it is so worth it! Soon you’ll have the community you needed and as a bonus might have helped your child make friends, too.
