Going to a wedding is usually a fun and exciting occasion. But when you are bringing a baby to a wedding, it can add quite bit of additional challenges.
This was the case for us last year. My brother got married, and while some people suggested hiring a baby sitter, I wanted to bring my baby to the wedding and celebrate with the whole family.
And with a little planning ahead and making some concessions, you can still have a wonderful time while ensuring your little one remains comfortable and happy.
In this blog post, I’ll provide you with practical advice on attending a wedding with a baby, from what to pack to ensuring a smooth experience for both you and your little bundle of joy.
Plan Ahead to Attend the Wedding with a Baby
To ensure a successful experience, it’s important to plan and prepare in advance.
Check with the Couple
Reach out to the couple and inquire about the wedding venue’s facilities.
Ask if they have a designated area for parents with infants or if they can make any accommodations to ease your experience.
This will give you an idea of what to expect and help you plan accordingly.
RSVP with Care
When responding to the wedding invitation, let the couple know that you’ll be attending with a baby.
This way, they can make appropriate arrangements and understand your needs. They may be able to assign seating near an exit or a quieter area.
Or, if you need a highchair for your baby to join you at the table, let them know so they can make the necessary arrangements.
Pack Strategically for You and Your Baby at the Wedding
Packing the right essentials will ensure you’re well-prepared for any situation that may arise. Here are some items to consider including in your baby’s bag:
1. Diapers & Wipes
Pack plenty of diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream, and a portable changing pad*.
You never know when you’ll need to change your baby’s diaper, and having these essentials handy will save you from any unnecessary stress.
2. Clothing
Pack a few extra outfits for your baby, as spills or accidents can happen at any time.
Also, consider the weather and dress your baby appropriately for the occasion.
And don’t forget to pack an extra outfit for you. Especially if your baby tends to have spit ups, or loves putting its little dirty hands on you.
3. Feeding Essentials
If your baby is bottle-fed, bring enough bottles, formula, and clean water.
If you’re breastfeeding, find a quiet spot where you can comfortably nurse your baby. Ask the couple if they can help you find a suitable spot
If your baby has started solids, pack some baby food, spoons, and bibs.
4. Comfort Items
Bring your baby’s favorite blanket, pacifier, and any other comforting objects that help them feel secure.
These familiar items can provide a sense of comfort and familiarity amidst the new environment.
5. First Aid Kit
Prepare a small first aid kit with essential items like baby pain relievers, band-aids, and any prescribed medications your baby may need.
Timing Is Key
When attending a wedding with a baby, timing plays a crucial role.
Because your baby is likely on a feeding and nap schedule. And what should you do if that schedule might not align with the celebration?
Consider the following tips:
Ceremony Seating
Arrive at the wedding venue a little earlier than usual to secure a seat at the ceremony near the exit.
This way, if your baby becomes hungry or fussy, or needs a diaper change, you can step out without causing disruption.
Nap Schedule
Take your baby’s nap schedule into account when planning your day.
If possible, schedule your arrival at the wedding venue around your baby’s nap time so they can rest before the festivities begin.
A well-rested baby is more likely to be content and cooperative.
If there is some time in between the ceremony and the party, you might want to go back home/to your hotel to put your baby down for a nap in the crib.
If there is not enough time to leave the wedding and come back, you could also go on a walk around the venue and attempt a nap in the stroller or baby carrier.
Feeding Schedule
Stick to your baby’s regular feeding schedule.
If the wedding reception spans a mealtime, find a quiet spot where you can comfortably nurse or bottle-feed your baby.
If your baby is already eating solids but the dinner is served much later than his usual dinner time, try offering some baby snacks or a pre-packed meal in between to keep him from getting too hungry.
Be Mindful of the Environment
Weddings can be overwhelming for babies due to the crowd, noise, and unfamiliar surroundings. Here are some suggestions to help your baby adjust:
Noise Reduction
Bring noise-canceling headphones* or earplugs designed to protect your baby’s delicate ears. These can be especially useful during loud music, speeches, or other moments with high noise levels.
By reducing the auditory stimulation, you can help your baby feel more at ease and prevent potential discomfort.
Babywearing
Consider using a baby carrier or sling to keep your little one close to you throughout the wedding.
This allows your baby to feel secure and provides a comforting environment amidst the hustle and bustle.
It also leaves your hands free to mingle, dance, or grab some food or a drink.
Create a Cozy Space
If the wedding venue allows, find a quiet corner or a designated area where you can set up a small portable crib* or a comfortable blanket for your baby.
This provides them with a familiar space to nap or play.
Sometimes venues even have small extra rooms near the main area that can be turned into little nap rooms or even used for bedtime sleep.
Stay Hydrated and Cool
Depending on the season and location of the wedding, it’s important to keep your baby hydrated and cool.
Ensure they have access to water or milk, especially in warmer weather.
Dress them in lightweight and breathable clothing to prevent overheating.
If necessary, use a small portable fan or find a shaded area to keep them comfortable.
Enlist Support
Bringing a baby to a wedding can be quite the challenge, and leave you exhausted. Don’t hesitate to ask for help you enjoy yourself a little bit as well.
Trusted Companion
If you don’t have a partner accompanying you to the wedding, consider bringing a family member or a close friend who can help you with baby-related tasks.
This person can lend a hand when you need to attend to something or simply provide support and company during the event.
Divide Responsibilities
Coordinate with your partner or any other accompanying adult to divide baby-related duties.
This way, both of you can enjoy the wedding festivities while ensuring your baby’s needs are met.
Take turns watching over the baby, changing diapers, and comforting them when required.
If you want to stay for the party after dinner but don’t feel comfortable having your baby sleep at the venue, consider sending your partner home with the baby.
This way, at least one of you gets to enjoy the party to the fullest, while your baby can also get a good night’s sleep.
Conclusion
Bringing your baby to a wedding may require some extra planning and preparation, but it’s absolutely possible to have a delightful experience for both you and your little one.
By planning ahead, packing strategically, being mindful of your baby’s needs, and enlisting support when necessary, you can enjoy the celebration while creating beautiful memories as a family.
Embrace the joyous atmosphere, cherish this special time, and remember that flexibility and a positive attitude will go a long way in ensuring a memorable and enjoyable wedding experience with your baby by your side.
